One of the most enjoyable parts of designing your dream bathroom can be choosing your bathroom accessories. From taps to tiles and cabinets to shower heads, the type of accessories that you choose can have a big impact on the overall look and feel of your bathroom.
Of course, before choosing your accessories, there are a few things that you need to consider. Firstly, what kind of budget are you working with? Try not to scrimp on accessories and always ensure you are choosing top quality products. Next, purchase the essentials first i.e. taps and tiles. Try and get a feel for the space before you decide on the finishing touches.
Lastly, don’t always go for well known brands. For example, a smaller, less known brand might have the best taps on the market, so always consider products individually when shopping around.
To guide you in the right direction, and ensure you keep within the realms of your chosen style, we asked our expert team to put together this handy guide with tips for choosing bathroom accessories.
Choosing Bathroom Tiles
With such a large selection of bathroom tiles on the market today, it can be difficult to decide to choose the right one’s for your space. Before you can even consider deciding on what tile you want for your bathroom, you will need to think about what style of bathroom you want.
Do you want a hotel style bathroom which is clean and minimalist? A decorative style bathroom which is bright and cheery? Or a geometric style bathroom which is unique and quirky?
Once you have decided on what style of bathroom you want, you will then be in a much better position to choose your bathroom tiles .Next up, it’s time to decide on the size of tile you want, if you are going for a clean look, then you will more than likely want to opt for larger tiles, whereas a quirkier look will allow for mosaic type tiles.
We always advise clients to choose floor tiles first, then wall tiles, followed by shower space tiles. It’s also a good idea to have no more than 3 different types of tiles if you are hoping to mix a few different patterns and sizes.
Finally, when choosing your bathroom tile, make sure you investigate how much maintenance that particular type of tile will require. Tiles which require little to no maintenance will obviously serve you much better in the long run.
Choosing Bathroom Taps
Your bathroom taps will be one of the most used accessories in your new space, so it’s important that you choose wisely. Again, it’s essential that you have decided on the style of your bathroom before you begin shopping for bathroom taps. If you are hoping to achieve a traditional style bathroom then opt for taps which feature detailing, ceramic inserts or cross head handles.
For a more modern look, consider a more contemporary tap which has clean lines and geometric style shapes. Look out for taps with waterfall spouts or motion sensitive operation.
Where will your taps be mounted? On the wall or on the sink and / or bath tub? This will also impact your decision on the type of tap that you opt for.
Lastly, it’s important to think about what type of finish you want your bathroom taps to have. Chrome is definitely the most popular choice thanks to their durability and the fact that they are easy to clean. Gold is a suitable choice of tap finish for a more traditional style of bathroom, with gold taps now boasting a new finish which makes them more robust than their plated predecessors.
Choosing Bathroom Cabinets
In most bathrooms, space is at a premium, so it’s essential that you keep this in mind when choosing your bathroom cabinets. The right bathroom cabinet can also act as a space saving solution and help to keep your bathroom organised and clutter free.
Durability is a big factor to consider when you are shopping for bathroom cabinets – you will want something that will stand the test of time and is suitable for the wet and humid atmosphere of a bathroom. With this in mind, wood is not the best option when it comes to cabinet material. Instead, take a look at some of the metal or MDF cabinets on the market, both of which are easy to clean and appropriate for a bathroom environment.
Depending on your budget, you might want to browse through some bathroom cabinets which have additional features such as mirrors, built-in sockets or LED lighting. However, if you are on a tight budget, then our team can advise you on the many minimalist type cabinets that are available and which ones would best suit your style of bathroom.
